Research

Salmon farming is an area that provides lots of opportunities and reasons for research. Some research is funded by industry, some is funded by government, and some is funded by a combination of both.

The list below provides information for anyone interested in learning more about Tasmania's salmon farming industry:

  • The Tasmanian Government is a supporting partner in the $329M Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) which brings together expertise in marine farming, renewable energy and engineering to support sustainable offshore development.
  • The Sustainable Marine Research Collaboration Agreement (SMRCA) is a partnership between the
    - State Government
    - University of Tasmania
    - Institute for Marine and Antarctic Science
They undertake a range of research and provide advice about temperate marine and coastal areas. IMAS have conducted a variety of extensive research in relation to salmon farming in Tasmania. Published research is available to the public on the IMAS website.
  • The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) is a statutory authority that manages research and development investment by the Australian Government and the Australian fishing and aquaculture commercial, recreational and indigenous sectors. FRDC invests in research, development and extension activities to increase economic, social and environmental benefits for Australian fishing and aquaculture, and the wider community. FRDC research is available on the FRDC website.
  • The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is an independent Australian federal government agency responsible for scientific research. • The Tasmanian Salmonid Growers Association (TSGA) is a not for profit organisation established by its grower members to represent the Industry by working with Federal and State Governments and their Regulatory Agencies. The TSGA is charged by its members with ensuring that reasonable and viable operating standards and conditions are established for the Industry by an Industry/Government partnership within an appropriate regulatory framework. On average, more than 75% of TSGA's income has been committed to strategic projects, research and development and fish health monitoring programmes. Information about the TSGA is available on the TSGA website.
